“Reflect on your own position.“
In this episode, Axel Petri-Preis and I discuss the concepts of music mediation, socially engaged arts practice and artistic citizenship. Axel is a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, the Deputy Head of the Department of Music Education Research and Practice and the Head of the Curricular Commission for a new Master’s programme called “Contemporary Arts Practice“. He has been a practicing music mediator since 2007 and still enjoys developing community projects and innovative concert formats. In the field of research, and as Editor-in-Chief, he initiated the International Journal of Music Mediation and co-edited the "Handbuch Musikvermittlung" (Handbook of Music Mediation). In our conversation we focus on these questions: What knowledge and skills do music students of today need if they want to become socially engaged artists? In what ways can music mediation projects support the societal transformations that are needed today? What can ethical foundations for music mediation projects look like?
